Léo Singh (TBS 2018) lights up the “Roof of the World ".
Léo Singh has lived in Mumbai, India, for several years now.
A force de travelling to all countries and regularly seeing the same problems, he decided to take part in the Global Himalayan Expedition in order to modify the impact of development, so that it would not only beneficial to the people, but also for the environment.
''THE MISSION:
Today, I have the chance to join a team of about 20 people as part of an expedition with the goal of electrifying the most isolated villages in the Ladakh region in the Himalayas of India.
We will depart for Ladakh from the Zanskar Valley, to equip Yougar community, that has about 85 inhabitants. This 100-year-old village is located near the Phuktal monastery, which is about 2,500 years old.
The region’s climate is hostile. Temperatures can reach 40°C during the hot periods, and in the winter, temperatures can drop as low as -20°C. This causes the villagers to equip themselves with kerosene-powered equipment, which is harmful to both their health and their environment.
With the help of Global Himalayan Expedition (an Indian company), we have taken the initiative to install solar panels in villages so they can become more autonomous.
The solar panels will reduce CO2 emissions by 80 tonnes a year.
The whole expedition is designed to reduce carbon emissions. Electricity will give these families a significant change in their lives, whether in terms of comfort, health, education, or their environment. ''
