Hamburg (German: Hamburg, Low German: Hamborg [ˈhaˑmbɔːχ]) is a city and one of Germany's 16 federal states.

Located in the north of the country, near the mouth of the Elbe River and close to the North Sea, Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city (after Berlin) and the country's largest port. The city covers an area of 755 km2 and has a population of 1.77 million1 ; the metropolitan area is around 3.5 million.

Hamburg was a founding member of the Hanseatic League. Today, the city continues to assert this membership as a defining element of its identity. Thus, the city's license plate code is HH, which stands for Hansestadt Hamburg, and its official name is Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg).

It's also a city of active tourism, thanks in no small part to its architecture, canal network and the lush banks of the Alster, a river that forms an artificial lake in the heart of the city.

It boasts numerous theaters and museums, including the famous Kunsthalle and the young Bucerius Kunst Forum, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Hamburg has an entire district dedicated to nightlife: Sankt Pauli and its Reeperbahn.
