Toward a commited future: Hélène Kuhry's Journey from Graduation to Environmental Volunteering.

13 March 2024 Association

Hélène KUHRY (TBS Education 2023) has always been committed to preserving the environment, and she chose to focus her studies on a profession that makes sense to her and respects her values. After two years as a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Communications Officer at Lactalis, Hélène undertook a volunteer mission in Greece, focusing on the protection of sea turtles and their habitats.

What is your educational and professional background?

Following a degree in international business, I was looking to move into the field of communications. With this in mind, in 2020 I joined TBS Education to follow the Marketing, Management & Communication master's program. I chose to join this school firstly because I wanted to continue my course of study on a sandwich course, something that TBS Education offered. And secondly, because I really appreciated its commitment to the environment, particularly through ANEDD (Les Assises Nationales Étudiantes du Développement Durable) and B3D (Bureau du Développement Durable). An event and an association in which I invested a lot of time during my Master's degree. This enabled me to develop my skills and blossom during a two-year work-study placement with the Lactalis Group as a CSR Communications Officer. It was a first professional experience in line with my desire to work for a sustainable future. I discovered that communications for a major group requires rigor and adaptability to deal with complex issues such as social and environmental challenges.

Once I had completed my Master's degree, I took a short break to think about my next objectives and the direction I wanted my future career to take. It was a precious and constructive moment that enabled me to gain both maturity and experience in the field. I wanted to get involved in a committed association. To this end, I applied for several positions, mostly abroad. To help me in my search, I was accompanied byAdice. It supports young people wishing to get involved in solidarity activities, notably through the European Solidarity Corps set up by the European Union. It provides administrative and financial support to enable young people to go abroad and promote shared European values. I was thus able to better define my project and discover the associations corresponding to it.

I finally joined the Archelon association for a six-month mission. Archelon is an association based in Greece, dedicated to the protection of sea turtles and their habitats.

Can you tell us about your mission?

I'm currently a volunteer at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Archelon, which rehabilitates injured and/or sick sea turtles from all over Greece.

My current missions involve communication and field work.

I take part in the center's awareness-raising and communication activities, aimed at the general public wishing to find out more about our activities. In particular, we organize guided tours of the center and dedicated communication campaigns. In 2022, we welcomed over 11,000 visitors from all over the world.

In the field, I take care of injured or sick sea turtles on a daily basis.

Our work begins early in the morning, with the treatment and cleaning of the sea turtles and the premises, the feeding, and when the time comes, we also take part in their "release", a magical moment for us all.

What advice would you give our readers?

Whether you're in the middle or at the end of your school career, and you'd like to carry out an impactful assignment that makes sense for you, get started! There are several support platforms and solutions to choose from, depending on your project and your desires. I recommend the one I used: Adice / Corps Européen de solidarité.

For me, when you're a student, work-study student or recent graduate, it's the ideal time to travel and/or embark on new projects.

Don't let your fears or preconceptions stop you. If you have a project in mind, find out as much as you can and go for it - you won't regret it!
